Exam Structure and Format

The B2 First (FCE) exam assesses a candidate’s ability to use English in a wide range of situations. The exam is divided into four sections:

Reading and Use of English (1 hour 15 minutes)

This combined section tests your ability to understand different types of texts, such as short stories, magazines, and online articles, and your knowledge of grammar and vocabulary. There are seven parts with a variety of tasks, including multiple-choice questions, cloze tests, and text completion.

Writing (1 hour 20 minutes)

This section assesses your ability to write different types of text, such as essays, emails, letters, articles, and reviews. You must complete two writing tasks:
Task 1: Write an essay based on a given prompt.
Task 2: Choose one out of three questions to write an article, letter/email, report, or review.

Listening (about 40 minutes)

The listening test consists of four parts designed to evaluate your ability to understand spoken English. You will listen to a variety of recordings, such as interviews, discussions, and lectures, and answer questions that test your comprehension.

Speaking (14 minutes per pair of candidates)

This section involves a face-to-face interview with an examiner and one other candidate. It includes four parts:
Part 1: Interview (general questions about yourself).
Part 2: Long turn (talk about a pair of pictures for one minute).
Part 3: Collaborative task (discuss a scenario with the other candidate).
Part 4: Discussion (deeper conversation on topics related to Part 3).

Scoring and Results

Scoring System: The B2 First (FCE) uses the Cambridge English Scale, with scores ranging from 140 to 190. To pass, you need to achieve a score of at least 160. The exam is graded across the four sections, with each section contributing to your overall score.

Grade A (180-190)

Indicates C1 level on the CEFR.

Grade B (173-179)

Reflects strong performance at the B2 level.

Grade C (160-172)

Indicates satisfactory performance at the B2 level.

Below 160

Does not receive a B2 First certificate but may receive a certificate for a B1 level if scoring above 140.

Results and Certificate: Results are usually available online four to six weeks after the paper-based exam or two to three weeks after the computer-based exam. Certificates are sent out shortly after the results are released.
