Exam Structure and Format

IELTS offers two distinct test versions designed for different purposes:

IELTS Academic

Designed for those applying to study at undergraduate or postgraduate levels, or seeking professional registration in an English-speaking environment.

The test reflects aspects of academic language and assesses whether you’re ready to begin training or studying.

IELTS General

Designed for those migrating to Australia, Canada, New Zealand, or the UK, or applying for secondary education, training programs, or work experience in an English-speaking environment.

The test focuses on basic survival skills in broad social and workplace contexts.

IELTS Academic Format

Listening (30 minutes + 10 minutes transfer time)

4 recorded sections, increasing in difficulty

40 questions total

Tasks include: multiple choice, matching, plan/map/diagram labelling, form completion, note completion, table completion, flow-chart completion, summary completion, sentence completion, short-answer questions

Recording is played ONCE only

British, Australian, New Zealand, and North American accents may be used

Academic Reading (60 minutes)

3 long passages from books, journals, magazines, and newspapers

Texts are authentic and often contain complex arguments, academic vocabulary, and dense information

40 questions total

Tasks include: multiple choice, identifying information, identifying writer’s views/claims, matching information, matching headings, matching features, matching sentence endings, sentence completion, summary completion, note completion, table completion, flow-chart completion, diagram label completion, short-answer questions

Academic Writing (60 minutes)

Task 1: Describe visual information (graph, table, chart, diagram) in your own words (150+ words)

Task 2: Write an essay in response to an argument or problem (250+ words)

Task 2 is worth twice as much as Task 1 in final scoring

Assessment is based on Task Achievement, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy

Speaking (11-14 minutes)

Face-to-face interview with a certified IELTS examiner

Recorded for quality assurance

Part 1: Introduction and general questions about yourself (4-5 minutes)

Part 2: Individual long turn – speak about a particular topic using notes (3-4 minutes)

Part 3: Two-way discussion on more abstract issues related to Part 2 topic (4-5 minutes)

Scoring And results

Scoring System: results are reported on a 9-band scale:

Scores are reported in whole and half bands (e.g., 6.0, 6.5, 7.0)

Each section (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) receives an individual band score

An Overall Band Score is calculated as the mean of the four section scores, rounded to the nearest whole or half band

Score requirements vary by organization and purpose:

Higher Education: Usually 6.0-7.5 overall, with minimum scores in each section
Immigration: Depends on visa type and country (typically 5.0-7.0)
Professional Registration: Varies by profession (typically 7.0+)

Results and Certificate: IELTS results are available 13 days after the paper-based test or 3-5 days after the computer-delivered test, with candidates receiving one Test Report Form (TRF) and the option to send up to five additional copies to recognizing organizations free of charge.

Test scores are valid for 2 years from the test date, after which candidates must retake the test if they wish to demonstrate their current English language proficiency.
